About Counseling

He has half the deed done who has made a beginning. -Horace

For those new to counseling, it can sometimes feel a little unsettling as to what to expect and that first step in choosing to enter into counseling is the most courageous step a person can make.   It's nice to have an overview of what it's all about... Every therapist has their own unique approach but there are some common ideas about what you can expect from the experience of counseling in general.  Additionally, at MCCA all the therapists  have in common a skilled ability and a love for working with children in particular and all are trained in "play therapy."  All MCCA therapists have a vitality and enthusiasm for helping people of all ages.  The high level of professionalism with which MCCA therapists observe their role lends to an experience of comfort and safety for all clients.

There are so many benefits to counseling they can't all be named.  Just as an example, people who feel depressed may find their mood lifting. Others may see an end to anxiety or anger, experiencing an ability to shift into more relaxed states of being having learned skills and adopted tools through counseling to manage anxious feelings.

In counseling adults and adolescents have an opportunity to talk things through without feeling judged often finding resolution emerge. Children have an opportunity to express through their play and artwork working through what is bothering them with the facilitation of skilled play therapists at MCCA.  Clients' skills in relationships and communication often greatly improve. One of the most valuable benefits to counseling often seems to be the way in which clients learn how to develop and maintain a sense of balance in life which yields more lasting contentment, satisfaction and skills for coping with the inevitable challenges life presents.

There is the reality and risk that through counseling clients may at times feel uncomfortable levels of sadness, guilt, anxiety, frustration, loneliness, helplessness or other negative feelings as a part of the process. Clients may recall unpleasant memories. Anytime people are making changes for the better, the existing way of being is upset to some degree and there is the risk that significant others in one’s life may have their own objections or negative reactions to a client’s positive changes.  Often, clients feel a bit worse before they feel better... but when clients stay with the process of counseling with the support of their therapist the benefits listed above most often prevail once moving through the unpleasant aspects of the process.

If you have further questions about what to expect from counseling, feel free to contact MCCA and a licensed therapist will be happy to answer your questions.
